Derby's Great Carbuncle

I think this picture says it all about how my home city of Derby is being treated. The hideous grey box on the skyline is a cinema which was erected on the top of the new Westfield Shopping Centre. I am still not sure how this 'carbuncle', which dominates many views of the city, got through the planning process.

Unfortunately, we are stuck with it for many years to come!

Dear Bill

This looks like the beginnings of a good, informative blog. I am also a concerned resident of Derby who is experiencing the distruction of this, once lovely, city, first hand. This council has a reccord of incompitence when it comes to so called development/regeneration. They will always find a way (underhand or otherwise) to push through their ill concieved ideas regardless of the concernes of local residence, always fending with the argument "the silent majority agree", meaning those people who are insufficiently informed for whatever reason or have no interest untill it affects them directly. How often have I heard people complaining about developments in this city when it is to late to do anything about it. The carbuncle you refere to being one of them. I haven't found anyone (other than those with a vested interest) who has anything possitive to say about it.
I hope that tis blog will help to get other people involved into wanting to have a rant and take more interest into what is happening to their surrounings. I applaud your effords. Keep up the good work.

Kind regard

When coming in to town from the South, along Osmaston Rd, the Westfield centre looks like a high security prison. I enjoy a lot of modern architecture, but I have never seen a shopping centre with less architectural merit. It's a good companion for the truly awful car park not too far away.
